Medicaid, CHIP enrollment increases significantly: 5 things to know

Since October 2013, when open enrollment began on the insurance marketplaces, more than 12.8 million people have enrolled in Medicaid and the Children's Health Insurance Program, according to a recent CMS report.

The preliminary estimates released in the report are based on enrollment data from 48 states and Washington, D.C., that provided May enrollment data and baseline data from July through September 2013.

Here are five things to know about the increase in enrollment.

1. Between Oct. 1, 2013 and May 31, 2015, Medicaid and CHIP enrollment increased by more than 22 percent.

2. In states that have expanded Medicaid and were covering newly eligible adults in May 2015, Medicaid and CHIP enrollment rose by approximately 29.2 percent compared to the baseline period of July 2013 to September 2013.

3. Thirteen of the 27 states that had implemented Medicaid expansion and were covering newly eligible adults in May experienced an enrollment increase of 30 percent or more.

4. In states that have not expanded Medicaid, enrollment in the two programs increased by approximately 9.5 percent from October 2013 to May 2015.

5. As of May, there were more than 71.6 million people enrolled in Medicaid and CHIP.
