Lurie Children's CEO Patrick Magoon: We need to protect managed care for kids

Patrick Magoon, president and CEO of Chicago-based Lurie Children's Hospital, is urging Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner not to cut funding for coordinated care programs in his 2016 budget, which was announced last week, according to the Chicago Tribune.

The governor's budget proposes a $1.47 billion cut to Medicaid, part of which helps fund programs like one at Lurie Children's that helps manage care for children with complex medical cases.

"[We have to] responsibly come back and say there's a better way of doing this for a subset of the Medicaid recipients that's better for them and better for the taxpayer. Because we end up picking up the pieces for these families anyway," Mr. Magoon told the Tribune.

Mr. Magoon told the Tribune he will lead the effort to prevent cuts to coordinated care programs. He said the hospital expects reimbursement rate reductions and has planned for them financially, but managed care is a critical investment.

"I think that moving into managed care is an absolutely essential tool for the governor to reduce costs in the state," he told the Tribune.
