Los Angeles County budget proposal targets safety net: 4 things to know

Los Angeles County's proposed budget includes funding for the area's poorest residents, according to a Los Angeles Times report.

Here are four things to know about the proposed budget.

1. The county's proposed budget for the fiscal year beginning July 1 is $30.02 billion, up 0.5 percent from last year, according to the report.

2. The proposed budget includes $355 million to help combat homelessness, as well as $45 million for hiring 220 new social workers and 100-plus new support staff at the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services, according to the report.

3. Additionally, the budget includes funding for a $90 million initiative called Whole Person Care, according to the report. On its website, the county's department of health services said the program aims to "provide comprehensive and coordinated services to the [county's] sickest, most vulnerable" Medicaid beneficiaries.

4. The county is slated to adopt a final budget in June, reports the Los Angeles Times.
