Kaleida expenses down, revenue up in first half of 2014

Kaleida Health, based in Buffalo, N.Y., saw its total operating expenses decrease by 1.6 percent year-over-year to $632 million during the first six months of 2014, while operating revenue rose by 0.7 percent to $637.9 million.

Overall, Kaleida reported a $19.9 million excess of revenue over expenses for the first half of this year, compared with a $5.5 million net loss for the first six months of 2013. For the six months ended June 30, the health system's expenses for salary, wages and contract labor totaled $267.7 million, compared with $274.1 million during the first half of 2013.

Expenses for medical and non-medical supplies also fell from $115.2 million during the first six months of 2013 to $113.2 million for the first half of this year. Additionally, expenses related to physician fees dropped from $44.3 million to $42.5 million.
