Judge to consider proposed order on Illinois Medicaid reimbursement

A proposed order in U.S. District Court calls for about $1 billion in monthly payments to Illinois Medicaid providers, according to a Reuters report.

The proposed order, filed by attorneys representing about three million Medicaid recipients in the state, comes as discussions with the state have stalled. It also comes amid the state's budget impasse.

In the proposed order, attorneys ask U.S. District Court Judge Joan Lefkow to mandate Illinois make $500 million in monthly Medicaid payments for four months to make a dent in the $3.1 billion the state owes managed care organizations, according to the report. Attorneys also ask that Illinois pay an additional $586 million monthly for Medicaid-related bills acquired after June 30, 2017, if the state still does not have a budget in place by the time the fiscal year begins July 1.

Judge Lefkow June 7 ordered Illinois to increase Medicaid funding and comply with federal consent decrees on the program. A court status hearing is scheduled for Wednesday in Judge Lefkow's court.

Reuters reports Illinois may end up having to stop fully funding other state spending if the proposed order takes effect.
