Jackson Health predicts higher patient volumes, surgeries will aid $1.9B budget: 6 things to know

Miami-based Jackson Health System predicts increased patient and surgery volumes and a tax infusion will fuel its $1.9 billion spending plan for 2018, according to a Miami Herald report.

Here are six things to know.

1. Jackson Health trustees approved the 2018 budget Tuesday. The system's spending plan includes an average 2 percent raise for its 12,000 full-time employees. The pay increase reflects $1.1 billion of the budget, among other operating expenses including purchased services and medical supplies.

2. To meet expenses, Jackson Health estimates it will increase patient visits from 66,000 in the fiscal year ending Sept. 30 to 68,000 patients next year. The system also projects its physicians will complete 23,300 surgeries in 2018, up from 22,500 in 2017, the report states.

3. The system anticipates its urgent care centers will see 28,200 patients in 2018 compared to 10,000 so far this year. Jackson Health has three urgent care centers and is set to open two more.

4. Jackson Health trustees greenlighted a $260 million capital project budget, which includes a network of urgent care centers, medical facilities and a proposed hospital in Doral, Fla., Miami Herald reports.

5. Jackson Health intends to fulfill remaining 2018 expenses with $442 million from Miami-Dade County sales and property taxes.

6. Miami-Dade commissioners' approval is required for the budget to pass, with a vote slated for September, according to the report.
