Hospital group says Illinois could lease HealthCare.gov

The Illinois Hospital Association anticipates the possibility of being able to set up a health insurance exchange at a lower cost if the federal government allows the leasing of its HealthCare.gov technology for use as a backbone.

In a letter to Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner and state lawmakers on Monday, the IHA said it expects the federal government to develop some kind of leasing fee to allow this to happen. Leasing the technology could be a viable option for as many as 34 states in which health subsidies may be jeopardized by the looming Supreme Court decision on the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.

"We as an association are ready to work with the legislative leaders and certainly the administration,”Maryjane Wurth, president and CEO of IHA, said in a statement. "We hope we have the governor's support to figure this out.”

If the Supreme Court does remove federal subsidies from the law, President Barack Obama has said there is no backup plan in place for the states that will be affected.
