Healthcare construction booming across Houston: 6 things to know

Hospitals in the Houston area continue to build and expand in response to a need for more, and newer, facilities, according to a report from Houston Public Media.

Here are six things to know about the construction boom.

1. CHI St. Luke's in Houston recently broke ground on a new hospital, a billion-dollar project.

2. Houston-based Memorial Hermann is also building new hospitals in Pearland, Texas, and Cypress, Texas, according to the report.

3. Additionally Houston Methodist is building a 187-bed, 470,000-square-foot facility in The Woodlands, Texas. The hospital is slated to open in 2017.

4. Texas Children's Hospital, located in the Texas Medical Center in Houston, is building a new pediatric community hospital in The Woodlands. Slated to open in 2017, the facility will include 32 acute care beds, 72 outpatient exam rooms and 25 emergency center rooms.

5. "You've seen a significant growth in the suburbs with population and density, and medical service providers are coming to their customers," Mark Sikes, a partner with Deal Sikes & Associates, told Houston Public Media.

6. Healthcare construction in the Houston area does not only include acute care hospitals, but also a range of facilities, from primary care clinics to rehabilitation facilities to urgent care centers, the report notes.
