Greenville Health System to explore private nonprofit governance model

Trustees voted Sept. 8 to explore new ways of governing Greenville (S.C.) Health System, which could include forming a private nonprofit system to run GHS, according to The State.

GHS is currently a $2 billion public nonprofit with eight campuses across the northwestern part of the state.

The board of trustees has been examining the system's governance structure over the past year. The board said the current structure limits GHS' options for becoming a private nonprofit.

The presented option would enable GHS to remain as a public nonprofit, but make it a part of a larger private, nonprofit multi-regional health system that could include other organizations. GHS would lease its assets to an affiliated organization run by the multi-regional health system. However, the change could create more than one board.

Four Greenville County legislators wrote a letter objecting the proposal, claiming there would be no governmental oversight if a private nonprofit runs the system. They also criticized the process for not being transparent.
