Geisinger sees revenue rise as inpatient volume grows 17.2%

Geisinger Health System got a financial boost from a 17.2 percent year-over-year increase in admissions in the quarter that ended Sept. 30. However, the Danville, Pa.-based health system still saw its expenses outpace revenue growth.

The six-hospital system attributed the increase in patient volume to success in expanding clinical programs and acquisitions. When looking at hospitals the system has owned for two years or more, admissions were only up 0.8 percent in the quarter that ended Sept. 30, compared to the same period of last year.

Geisinger reported revenue of approximately $1.2 billion in the period that ended Sept. 30, up 11.9 percent from the same quarter of the year prior.

The system attributed the financial boost to a number of factors, including increases in patient service and premium revenue. Membership in Geisinger's health plans increased 7.4 percent year over year.

The health system's expenses also increased, growing 13.9 percent to $1.1 billion in the period that ended Sept. 30.

Geisinger ended the quarter with operating income of $32 million, down from $46.6 million in the same period of the year prior.
