CMS updates provider market saturation tool: 3 things to know

CMS released the fifth edition of its market saturation and utilization data tool July 24.

Here are three things to know.

1. CMS' market saturation and utilization data tool features a color-coded map and dataset depicting provider services and use across selected areas. Data is presented at the national, state and county level.

2. The updated addition includes long-term care hospitals and chiropractic services data. In total, the fifth release features five, 12-month reference periods across home health, ambulance, independent diagnostic testing facilities, skilled nursing facilities, hospice, physical and occupational therapy, clinical laboratory, long-term care hospitals and chiropractic services.

3. The tool "can be used by CMS to monitor and manage market saturation as a means to prevent fraud, waste and abuse," CMS said. Providers may also use the public data to help make "informed decisions about their service locations and the beneficiary population they serve."

The tool can be found here.
