California prepares $20M fund to support rural healthcare pending federal cuts

California will create a $20 million one-time emergency grant program for small or rural nonprofit clinics, including Planned Parenthood clinics, facing potential federal cuts, according to the office of State Treasurer John Chiang.

The Community Clinic Lifeline Grant Program is designed to help these locations "keep their doors open and provide critical services as lawmakers work to address the potential losses in healthcare funds due to threatened federal actions such as repealing the [ACA] and eliminating funding for essential women's health and preventative services," the treasurer's office said in a news release.

Treasurer spokesperson Marc Lifsher told Reuters a state financing program will provide grant funds.

President Donald Trump has proposed cutting health and human services spending, and the American Health Care Act passed by the House May 4 would cut federal monies for Planned Parenthood, the publication states.

Mr. Chiang's office is scheduled to provide additional details on the grant program during a news conference Monday with state lawmakers and healthcare advocates.
