Boston Medical Center expands redesign of its campus

Boston Medical Center has expanded the planned redesign of its campus, adding millions to the estimated cost of construction and renovations, according to The Boston Globe.

The redesign, which includes rehabilitation of some facilities and building new facilities, was originally projected to cost $270 million but is now projected to cost $300 million, according to the report. That's primarily due to increased construction prices for elements of the project that have been updated, as well as new upgrades that were put into the plan.

Bob Biggio, the hospital's vice president of facilities and support services, told The Boston Globe that construction prices have outpaced inflation. Additionally, he told the publication, hospital officials decided to upgrade the electrical and heating systems and expedite renovations of some patient rooms, all of which added to construction costs.

The redesign project is a four-year endeavor that began last year and is intended to shrink the hospital campus by 300,000 square feet, according to the report. The redesign includes an expansion of the emergency department, and will relocate several patient care areas.
