Anthem Blue Cross Leads PPACA Enrollment in California

Anthem Blue Cross signed more people up for Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act exchange plans during the 2014 open enrollment period than any other health insurer in California, according to a Los Angeles Times report.

By April 15, Anthem had enrolled 425,058 people, representing 30.5 percent of the state's health insurance exchange market, according to the report. Blue Shield of California had 381,457 enrollees (27.3 percent), Health Net had 264,079 (18.9 percent) and Kaiser Permanente had 241,098 (17.3 percent).

Overall, nearly 1.4 million people enrolled in health plans through the state exchange, according to the report. Last week, President Barack Obama announced the exchanges nationwide had reached 8 million enrollees as of April 15. The exchanges have far exceeded expectations: The most recent Congressional Budget Office benchmark (released in February) was 6 million.
