AAPC health system employee members made nearly $51k in 2015 & 12 other statistics

The AAPC's annual "2015 Salary Survey" found AAPC members with additional AAPC credentials had higher salaries than those members with fewer credentials.

In the survey, AAPC gathered responses from nearly 18,000 members.

Here are 13 statistics:

1. AAPC members working in health systems reported the highest salary in 2015 at $51,389, followed by hospital inpatient AAPC members ($50,925).

2. Respondents working in large group practices of 50 or more physicians made $48,033 on average in 2015.

3. Those working in hospital outpatient workplaces made $45,722, slightly more than their solo practice/small group practice (two to 10 physicians) counterparts at $45,722.

4. AAPC members working in medium group practices (11-49 physicians) made $44,870 on average in 2015.

5. Seventy-two percent of AAPC members worked between 40 hours and 45 hours each week, down 2.1 percent from 2014.

6. Respondents residing in the East North Central region had a 2.2 percent increase in their salary in 2015.

7. Overall, the average salary for medical coders was $48,584 in 2015.

8. Coders with one credential made $46,899 on average, lower than those members with two or more credentials at $58,399.

9. Coders with three or more credentials had an average salary of $65,643.

10. The survey noted a marginal increase in unemployment from 2014. AAPC members with a degree had a 0.5 percent unemployment increase while members without a degree had a 0.7 percent increase in unemployment.

11. AAPC found Certified Physician Practice Manager with three credentials had a 6.7 percent increase in salary from last year. CPPMs made $64,666 in 2015, up from $60,607 in 2014.

12. Certified Professional Coders with three credentials had a 2.8 percent increase in salary. CPCs made $50,030 on average in 2014, with that figure increasing to $51,454 in 2015.

13. Certified Outpatient Coders with three credentials had a 2 percent increase in salary year-over-year. In 2015, COCs with three credentials made $58,822, up from $57,680 in 2014.
