8 Key Hospital Statistics from the Newly Released 2012 Economic Census

The U.S. Census Bureau has released the 2012 Census Advance Report, providing the first comprehensive look at the country's economy since the recent recession.

moneyAlong with information on many other industry sectors, the Census Bureau has included facts and figures concerning the hospital industry from both 2007 and 2012. Here are eight key statistics on hospitals from the report.  

1. Total number of hospitals in 2007: 6,505
2. Total number of hospitals in 2012: 6,552
3. Total value of hospital business in 2007: $703 billion
4. Total value of hospital business in 2012: $860 billion
5. Annual hospital payroll in 2007: $265 billion
6. Annual hospital payroll in 2012: $315.6 billion
7. Total number of hospital employees in 2007: 5.53 million
8. Total number of hospital employees in 2012: 5.77 million
