16.4M gain health coverage under PPACA

About 16.4 million uninsured people have gained health insurance coverage since the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act's coverage provisions took affect, according to a report from HHS' Office of the Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation.

That includes 14.1 million adults who gained health insurance coverage since the beginning of open enrollment in October 2013 through March 4, 2015, according to the report. It also includes 2.3 million young adults (age 19-25) who gained health insurance coverage between 2010 and the start of open enrollment in October 2013 due to the PPACA provision allowing young adults to be on a parent's health plan until age 26.

The report showed that the uninsured rate declined across all race/ethnicity categories since the beginning of open enrollment in October 2013, with a larger decline among African Americans and Latinos than among Whites.

It also showed that health insurance coverage gains since October 2013 were especially strong in Medicaid expansion states and were concentrated among low and middle income population groups in all states.
