Florida Hospital for Children to start pediatric liver transplants after state approval

Orlando-based Florida Hospital for Children will launch a pediatric liver transplant program after the state Agency for Health Care Administration approved its application.

Florida Hospital for Children will become the second hospital in the state to perform pediatric liver transplants, according to the Orlando Sentinel. Miami-based Jackson Memorial Hospital is the only other hospital in the state to offer pediatric liver transplants.

To establish a pediatric liver transplant program in Florida, a hospital must show there is a need for the services, and the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration must approve the application.

"We believe there is a critical need for children not just in Central Florida, but across our state, to have access to a liver transplant program that is close to home," said Rajan Wadhawan, MD, CMO of Florida Hospital for Children. "Dozens of children and their families travel great distances for this treatment, and the overall care needed for liver transplants can last a long time."

Florida Hospital for Children anticipates accepting patients in January.
