Medical resident salaries by gender, region and residency year

Overall, the average medical resident salary is $55,400, but what these training physicians really earn can depend on their gender, region of practice and residency year, according to Medscape's 2015 Residents Salary & Debt Report.

The Medscape report includes data from more than 1,700 medical residents in 24 specialties who took part in an online survey from May 14 through June 22. All of the participants were enrolled in a U.S. medical resident program when they took the survey.

Men — $56,000

Women — $55,000

Region

Northeast — $62,000

Northwest — $57,000

West — $56,000

Great Lakes — $55,000

Mid Atlantic — $55,000

North Central — $54,000

Southwest — $53,000

South Central — $53,000

Southeast — $51,000

Residency Year

First post-MD year — $52,000

Second post-MD year — $54,000

Third post-MD year — $55,000

Fourth post-MD year — $58,000

Fifth post-MD year — $60,000

Sixth post-MD year — $61,000

Seventh post-MD year — $66,000

Eighth post-MD year — $63,000
