Medical resident benefits and compensation satisfaction: 3 things to know

The number of medical residents that report feeling fairly compensated grew between 2014 and 2015, which may have something to do with the benefits they receive, according to Medscape's 2015 Residents Salary & Debt Report.

The Medscape report includes data from more than 1,700 medical residents in 24 specialties who took part in an online survey from May 14 through June 22. All of the participants were enrolled in a U.S. medical resident program when they took the survey.

Highlighted below are three things to know about medical resident benefits and compensation satisfaction.

1. On average, nearly two thirds (62 percent) of the residents Medscape surveyed reported that they considered their compensation fair, compared to just 47 percent of practicing physicians.

2. Female medical residents reported feeling fairly compensated (65 percent) more often than male residents (60 percent), up from 57 percent and 48 percent in 2014, respectively.

3. In addition to their salaries, many medical residents reported that they receive the following benefits:

  • Paid time off (vacation, sick days and personal time) — 90 percent
  • Health insurance — 85 percent
  • Professional liability coverage — 75 percent
  • Meal allowance — 66 percent
  • Book allowance — 65 percent
  • Other benefits — 8 percent
  • Child care — 3 percent
  • None of the above — 1 percent
