How Much Are Hospitals Paying Coders?

The average salary of coders and other revenue cycle specialists is $46,847, slightly less than last year due to an influx of new hires, according to the AAPC's annual healthcare salary survey.

AAPC's survey covers compensation for healthcare coders, billers, practice managers, auditors and educators within the frontlines of hospital finance departments. Here are some key statistics from the survey:

•    Coders with at least 15 years of experience had an average salary of $56,667.
•    Certified professional compliance officers made $69,138 on average.
•    Average salaries for certified professional billers were $61,667.
•    Certified professional medical auditors earned $61,115 per year.
•    Certified professional practice managers had average salaries totaling $59,619.
•    Certified professional coders (payers) made $57,995, a shade higher than certified professional coders (hospital outpatient), which was $56,284.
•    Coders in solo and small group practices earned an average salary of $42,202, whereas as coders in health systems made $48,789.
