Controversial Erlanger bonuses under fire again

Some of Chattanooga, Tenn.-based Erlanger Health System's board members may be asked to resign over the $1.7 million in management bonuses the system recently paid out, according to a Times Free Press report.

Tennessee Attorney General Herbert H. Slatery III recently issued an opinion regarding the state's open meetings law. Although the opinion didn't specifically mention Erlanger, Tennessee Rep. Mike Carter (R-Ooltewah) told the Times Free Press it was clear the system violated the law when it met in a closed session to discuss the bonuses, according to the report.

Erlanger plans to re-vote on the management bonuses following the Attorney General's opinion. However, some of the system's board members may still be asked to resign.

After the Attorney General's opinion was released, Tennessee Sen. Todd Gardenshire (R-Chattanooga) called lawmaker-appointed hospital trustee Phyllis Miller, MD, informing her "he wanted to give her the opportunity to step down before he and other members of the Hamilton County delegation formally asked her to do so," according to the report.
