Community Health Systems' CEO Compensation Nearly Doubled in 2 Years

Wayne Smith, chairman, president and CEO of Franklin, Tenn.-based Community Health Systems, saw his total compensation nearly double from 2008 to 2010, receiving more than $20.9 million last year, according to a Wall Street Journal report.

In 2008, Mr. Smith's total compensation was close to $10.7 million but grew to $17.8 million in 2009, according to figures reported by WSJ from a company proxy statement filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

As part of the $20.9 million package, Mr. Smith received $5.4 million in cash salary and incentive pay, $6.78 million in restricted stock awards, approximately $8.2 million in deferred earnings and more than $55,400 for personal use of corporate aircraft.
