10 Physician Specialties With the Highest Gross Charges

Gross production is still a common measure of physician productivity, affecting physician compensation. In 2012, 79 percent of physicians posted an increase in gross charges.

According to American Medical Group Association's 2013 compensation and financial survey, which analyzed 30 physician specialties, diagnostic radiologists had the highest median gross charges in 2012. They have had the highest gross charges in each of the past four years, as well.

Here are the 10 physician specialties that posted the highest median gross charges in 2012, according to the AMGA's survey.

1.    Interventional diagnostic radiology — $2.36 million
2.    Noninterventional diagnostic radiology — $2.18 million
3.    Orthopedic surgery — $2.01 million
4.    Gastroenterology — $1.93 million
5.    Ophthalmology — $1.9 million
6.    Urology — $1.8 million
7.    Pathology (MDs only) — $1.73 million
8.    Cardiac and thoracic surgery — $1.66 million
9.    Dermatology — $1.65 million
10.    Otolaryngology — $1.61 million
