VA leader calls for 'tens of thousands' of new staff members to solve capacity issues

VA Secretary Robert McDonald says the Veterans Administration needs "tens of thousands of new doctors, new nurses [and] new clinicians," to repair its broken scheduling system, according to a report from CNN.

The new Secretary testified to Congress last week and revealed plans for a mass hiring process for physicians, nurses, other healthcare professionals, support staff and building maintenance staff. The system also indicated it was beefing up its recruiting processes, heading to schools like Duke University and the University of Pennsylvania to attract new graduates to its workforce, which is nearly 350,000 strong across the country.

Earlier this summer, the VA indicated it has about 36,000 empty positions to fill, according to the report.
