NewYork-Presbyterian to double ED size by 2017

NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital has announced it will double the size of its emergency department to combat long wait times, according to a report from DNAInfo.

The new expansion will increase the number of treatment bays from 44 to 88 and will cost $100 million. It will open in 2017.

In the mean time, the hospital is launching an education campaign about when emergency treatment is necessary. Approximately 75 percent of patients who come to the NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital ED could be seen in a primary care or urgent care facility, according to the report.

The plans come as the hospital has been battling wait times and treatment times that are significantly higher than New York's state averages.
