New Shriners hospital to open in St. Louis June 1 with smaller staff

Tampa, Fla.-based Shriners Hospitals for Children is set to open a new facility in St. Louis that is both smaller in size and staffed by fewer people than its original site, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

The hospital will be moving into a three-story, 90,000-square-foot facility with 12 inpatient beds from a 182,000-square-foot building in Frontenac, Mo. In addition to reducing its size, the hospital has also reduced the number of staff by about 20 percent, from 173 to 139.

John Gloss, the hospital administrator, told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch the workforce reduction mainly affected the administration department and support services, adding that no direct clinical staffers were lost. Mr. Gloss also noted several staffers took severance packages to save the jobs of other workers.

The $50 million hospital is scheduled to open June 1.
