DMC raises the first beam of its new pediatrics tower

Detroit Medical Center Children's Hospital of Michigan raised the first beam today of its new six-story pediatrics tower, according to The Detroit News.

DMC officials say the pediatrics tower will place the medical center among the country's leading institutions for treating children with serious conditions. Plans for the tower include:

  • Expanded pediatric and neonatal intensive care units,
  • A pediatric emergency department with 48 exam rooms and four trauma bays; and
  • Expanded surgical facilities for transplants, neurosurgery and other complex procedures.

"[The new tower] really will give us capabilities comparable to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, Boston Children's Hospital" and other world-class pediatric hospitals, DMC CEO Joseph Mullany told The Detroit News.

Construction on the 248,800 square-foot tower is slated for completion in early 2017.
