UCSF Chancellor Reveals ACO Plans in 'State of the University' Speech

In a "State of the University" speech Tuesday, University of California, San Francisco Chancellor Susan Desmond-Hellmann, MD, MPH, revealed plans to start an accountable care organization at UCSF Medical Center.

"We're reaching out to other healthcare providers throughout northern California to create our own ACO," she said. "We're creating a UCSF Accountable Care Organization not only committed to delivering the highest quality, safest care but in a way that consumers can reduce their costs and have better health outcomes."

This would not be UCSF's first foray into accountable care: In 2011, UCSF Medical Center joined with St. Mary's Medical Center in Long Beach, Calif., Saint Francis Memorial Hospital in San Francisco and Hill Physicians Medical Group in San Ramon, Calif., for an ACO covering San Francisco city employees with a Blue Shield of California HMO plan.
