Cigna, Adventist care collaboration program yields improved quality, lower costs

Early results from Cigna Collaborative Care — an ACO-like program between Cigna and Bolingbrook, Ill.-based Adventist Health Network — are promising, with improvements in inpatient hospital admissions, adolescent well care visits, emergency room visits for chronic conditions and lowering costs.

Cigna's collaborative care program with Adventist Health Network launched in January 2014 and provides care to more than 5,000 customers covered by Cigna's health plans. A year after the program was launched, the program has seen:

1. Adventist's total medical cost trending 5.1 percent better than the market

2. A decrease in inpatient hospital admissions of 17 percent

3. Improved care coordination between affiliated physicians

4. Better management of asthma, diabetes and other chronic conditions; and

5. A reduction in emergency department visits for non-emergency care.

"With a care coordinator in place and access to data from Cigna, we have been able to help people get the right care, in the right place, at the right time," said George G. Mayzell, MD, a member of Adventist Health Network's board of directors. "As a result, patients have seen their health improve and their costs decrease."
