Aetna, MemorialCare to launch accountable care collaboration

Aetna and Fountain Valley, Calif.-based MemorialCare Health System announced a collaboration Wednesday to offer accountable care to patients in Orange County and parts of Los Angeles County through a new commercial product, Aetna Whole HealthSM – MemorialCare.

Aetna Whole HealthSM – MemorialCare plans will be available to self-insured businesses beginning Sept. 1 and will be effective Nov. 1. Aetna and MemorialCare expect to roll out the plans for fully insured customers in 2016, though fully insured Aetna members who have seen a MemorialCare physician in the last year will be automatically enrolled in the program beginning Oct. 1.

Through the program, patients will have access to coordinated care from approximately 2,000 physicians, seven hospitals and more than 40 urgent care centers. The program is designed to improve the management of patients with chronic disease, promote preventive care and reduce avoidable hospital readmissions and emergency room visits.

The program is also designed to reduce costs. Employers enrolled in the program will have the potential to save up to 15 percent compared to other broad network Aetna products.

"We are proud to team with Aetna to unveil a new health plan option for businesses and their employees that offers easy access to a large comprehensive network," Barry Arbuckle, PhD, MemorialCare Health System president and CEO, said in the release. "This advances our commitment to highly personalized healthcare that focuses on achieving exceptional outcomes, improving the health of our communities, helping patients achieve healthier lives and partnering with patients, physicians, employers, health plans and communities to further these goals."
