Johns Hopkins Hospital (Baltimore). In 1902, the first brain surgery in the United States was performed by Harvey Cushing, MD — known as the father of neurosurgery — at Johns Hopkins. The hospital has continued to grow its specialty program since then. For 2016-17, U.S. News & World Report ranked Johns Hopkins Hospital No. 1 in Maryland and No. 2 in the nation for neurology and neurosurgery. Johns Hopkins provides patients with access to 13 specialty centers pertaining to neurological care, including one of the largest brain tumor treatment research centers in the world.
