Children's National Medical Center (Washington, D.C.). Founded in 1870, Children's National Medical Center has provided healthcare to children for more than 140 years in the nation's capital. This 313-bed institution — which includes more than 60 intensive care beds and the only pediatric neuro-intensive care and cardiac intensive care units in the region — is one of the nation's first children's hospitals and the only freestanding children's hospital between Philadelphia and Atlanta. Clinicians treat more than 300,000 patients every year, and the hospital provides upwards of $45 million in uncompensated care annually.

Children's National has been recognized for excellence in nursing with a Magnet designation. The hospital was ranked in 10 pediatric specialties by U.S. News & World Report for 2015-16, securing its status as the No. 10 children's hospital in the nation. Additionally, Children's National is a 2015 Leapfrog Top Children's Hospital. The organization's Children's Research Institute and the Sheikh Zayed Institute for Pediatric Surgical Innovation make the hospital one of the nation's top pediatric institutions in regards to National Institutes of Health grants. Additionally, Children's National is a teaching hospital, and its research institute oversees educational activities, academic affairs and the Department of Pediatrics at The George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences.

The hospital's proximity to Capitol Hill facilitates a great passion for child advocacy among the organization's employees. They are often first at the table in Washington when lawmakers are developing federal pediatric healthcare policy.
