University of Chicago Medicine. University of Chicago Medicine has been treating patients on the South Side of Chicago and beyond since it opened in the Hyde Park neighborhood in 1927. In 2013, U of C Medicine contributed $283 million (22.5 percent) of its operating expenses in community benefits and services to help people in the communities it serves.

The medical campus in Hyde Park is made up of several institutions that fall under the University of Chicago Medicine umbrella. Included among those is the Center for Care and Discovery, which the organization bills as a "hospital for the future" ands says is the new core of its campus. The 240-room, 10-story hospital opened in February 2013 and focuses on cancer, digestive diseases, neuroscience, advanced surgery and imaging. Other institutions on the campus include the Bernard A. Mitchell Hospital for emergency medicine, maternity care and burn care; the Comer Children's Hospital and the Duchossois Center for Advanced Medicine.

The academic medical center is the No. 6 hospital in both Chicago and Illinois, according to U.S. News & World Report's most recent rankings. It is licensed for 586 beds and saw 260 pediatric trauma visits in fiscal year 2014.
