The Johns Hopkins Hospital | 100 Great Hospitals in America 2015

The Johns Hopkins Hospital (Baltimore). Last year, The Johns Hopkins Hospital celebrated its 125-year anniversary of providing care. The hospital opened in 1889, and the affiliated Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine opened four years later.

The Johns Hopkins Hospital has been an innovation hub, performing a number of "firsts" in the healthcare industry. The hospital created the radical perineal prostatectomy to treat prostate cancer in 1904, developed CPR in 1958, developed and performed the world's first minimally invasive live-donor kidney removal in 1995 and performed a double-arm transplant in 2012, to name a few. Additionally, the school of medicine was the first major medical school in the country to admit women.

More than 1,900 attending physicians staff 1,145 licensed acute-care beds. The Johns Hopkins Hospital has more than 48,000 inpatient admissions, more than 495,000 outpatient visits and nearly 100,000 emergency department visits each year.

Since U.S. News & World Report started ranking hospitals in 1990, The Johns Hopkins Hospital has been ranked No. 1 in the country 22 times. In 2014-15, it was ranked No. 3 in the country. The hospital is also Magnet-designed by the American Nurses Credentialing Center.
