Spartanburg (S.C.) Medical Center. Spartanburg Medical Center serves more than 100,000 people a year from a five-county area in North and South Carolina with a staff of more than 500 physicians. The 540-bed teaching and research hospital features a modern eight-story patient tower with 168 private rooms. SMC includes a center for breast health, cancer center and research institute, Level III neonatal intensive care unit, a center for women and a 24-hour emergency Level I trauma center. It also offers pediatric and hospice services.

SMC is also home to the Spartanburg Regional Heart Center, which offers a broad range of advanced heart care, including emergency care, open heart surgery, rehabilitation and prevention. Specialists at the Heart Center performing the first "beating heart" surgery in the state and developed the first nationally accredited Chest Pain Center in the state.

U.S. News & World Report ranked SMC the No. 1 hospital in South Carolina in its 2014-15 rankings. The hospital was also named a Magnet hospital by the American Nurses Credentialing Center for nursing excellence.
