Brigham and Women's Hospital | 100 Great Hospitals in America 2015

Brigham and Women's Hospital (Boston). Located in Boston's Longwood Medical Area, the 793-bed Brigham and Women's Hospital is a teaching affiliate of Harvard Medical School, and includes more than 150 outpatient practices and more than 1,200 physicians. Brigham and Women's partnered with Massachusetts General Hospital in 1994 to form the nonprofit Partners HealthCare.

Brigham and Women's opened in 1980 as a brand-new, state-of-the-art facility, marking the merger of three Boston-based Harvard teaching hospitals: the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital, the Robert Breck Brigham Hospital and the Boston Hospital for Women.

The first successful human organ transplant was performed at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in 1954 and since its launch in 1980, Brigham and Women's has continued to host a long list of firsts in transplants and surgeries. Among many other firsts, Brigham and Women's is home to New England's first heart transplant performed in 1984, the nation's first triple-organ transplant in 1995, the first ever quadruple-organ transplant in 2000 and the nation's first full face transplant in 2011.

Brigham and Women's has been ranked as a top hospital by U.S. News & World Report for 22 consecutive years and ranked No. 9 in the country in 2014. It is nationally ranked in 13 specialties, and five made the top five, including gynecology, cancer, cardiology and heart surgery, nephrology and rheumatology. Its Dana-Farber Cancer Institute is also a Magnet-recognized organization for excellence in nursing.
