The Nebraska Medical Center - 100 Great Hospitals in America | 2014

The Nebraska Medical Center (Omaha). The Nebraska Medical Center was founded in 1997 through the merger of two longstanding hospitals: Bishop Clarkson Memorial Hospital, founded in 1869, and University Hospital, founded in 1917. Today, The Nebraska Medical Center is the largest healthcare facility in the state and includes more than 1,000 physicians.

The-Nebraska-Medical-Center-factsU.S. News & World Report ranked The Nebraska Medical Center as the top hospital in the state in 2013-14. The nonprofit hospital also earned a nod from the publication as one of the top 50 in the country for cancer care. The Nebraska Medical Center is Magnet-designated for nursing excellence. In fiscal year 2013, the hospital had nearly 25,000 inpatient admissions and almost 51,000 emergency department visits. The Nebraska Medical Center, a partner to the University of Nebraska Medical Center, has a National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center and has one of two state-designated trauma centers.

In 2013, surgeons at The Nebraska Medical Center were the first in the state to implant a total artificial heart into a 42-year-old patient whose donated heart was failing. This is just one of The Nebraska Medical Center's many milestones as a trailblazer for clinical care and medical discoveries in the state. It is also home to the state's first nationally certified stroke center and first anonymous living kidney donation and transplant, and staff at The Nebraska Medical Center delivered the state's first set of quintuplets in 1998.
