Cleveland Clinic. Founded in 1921 by four physicians who wanted to see a healthcare model centered on patient care and medical research, Cleveland Clinic is a nonprofit, multispecialty academic medical center with 1,450 beds on its main campus and 4,450 beds systemwide. Cleveland Clinic operates more than 75 outpatient centers in northern Ohio and has 3,034 physicians and scientists.
Cleveland Clinic ranked fourth overall on U.S. News & World Report's Best Hospitals 2013-14 Honor Roll, holding the top spot in both Ohio and the Cleveland metro area. It has also received Magnet recognition from the American Nurses Credentialing Center for nursing excellence.
The hospital encompasses three large research and education institutions. The Lerner Research Institute is home to laboratory-based, translational and clinical biomedical research conducted by 2,000 scientists and support personnel. The other two are the Education Institute, one of the nation's largest physician-graduate training programs, and Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University, which aims to help medical students become physician-scientists.
Cleveland Clinic is also home to numerous medical breakthroughs, such as the discovery that bariatric surgery controls diabetes, the first kidney surgery performed through a patient's navel, the first near-total face transplant and the first coronary angiography.
Cleveland Clinic sees more than 4 million patients each year.
